The Geopark located near the new building of Faculty of Science has been built since 2015. This exhibition contains 45 samples from 31 sites and it is focused on region of Moravia and Silesia.

Various rocks from different geological units of the Bohemian Massif and the Western Carpathians are represented there. The Geopark is designed to link geological education and popularization.

Olomouc is a mid-sized typical university town. The Palacky University (UP) with its 25 thousand students and several thousands of employees forms the demographically most significant group and intellectual force of Olomouc (100 000 inhabitants). With its historical center (UNESCO), cultural sights, traffic and commercial infrastructure and ideal size for pedestrians, Olomouc is an ideal place for living.

The Palacky University in Olomouc is no longer a peripheric school within the Republic. Founded in 1573 and renewed in 1946, it underwent quick development in the last 20 years on the basis of research centers of the Faculties Medicine and Natural Sciences, increased scientific performance and construction of new buildings. Faculty of Science of the Palacky University belongs annually to 5 or 6 best performing scientific organizations in the Czech Republic and keeps gaining national and international respect.

The Department of Geology of the Faculty of Science, the Palacky University (PřF UP), situated in new building (open in 2009) at 17. listopadu 12 in Olomouc offers pleasant atmosphere for study, excellent field laboratory equipment, ample possibilities for exchange fellowships within the Erasmus+ program, personal approach to students and background of the PřF UP.

The Department of Geology offers education in main theoretical and applied geological discipline. Theoretically oriented students are enabled to study classical fields like palaeontology, mineralogy or stratigraphy here. Those progressive ones can focus on applied research including geotechnics, geoarchaeology, construction materials and geophysics with good chances of finding a place in the labor market. The study of environmental geology is based on wide interdisciplinary cooperation with ecology, geoinformatics, chemistry, archaeology and further fields within UP.

prof. Ondřej Bábek, head of the department

  • The Laboratory of shallow geophysics provides a number of equipment and instruments. We participate in research activities at both Czech Republic and abroad.

  • We have instruments and equipment for field work and laboratory analyzes at excellent and internationally-comparable level. All devices are fully available to our students.

  • We took emphasis on practical training during geological excursions and field practices. A two-week Field Practice in Geological Mapping is a crucial one.

  • We deal with both basic and applied research. We publish in prestigious international journals and participate in the fieldwork and internships all over the world.

Science & research

We deal with the practical use of geological principles in solving environmental problems. We provide educational and popularization activities. We cooperate with the state institutions and the private sphere. We solve a number of research projects. We participate in domestic and international conferences and regularly hold the Paleozoic conference.
