The Palacky University (UP) with its 25 thousand students and several thousands of employees forms the demographically most significant group and intellectual force of Olomouc (100 000 inhabitants). The Department of Geology offers education in main theoretical and applied geological discipline. Theoretically oriented students are enabled to study classical fields like palaeontology, mineralogy or stratigraphy here. Those progressive ones can focus on applied research including geotechnics, geoarchaeology, construction materials and geophysics with good chances of finding a place in the labor market. The study of environmental geology is based on wide interdisciplinary cooperation with ecology, geoinformatics, chemistry, archaeology and further fields within UP.
